Where to stay

without financing the Swiss economy single-handedly

Geneva is beautiful, safe, compact and very easy to get around. It is also not famous for being cheap. The good news is that you absolutely do not need to stay in the city centre: public transport is excellent, distances are short, and hotels in Geneva often (not always) include a Geneva Transport Card for buses, trams, local trains and the little yellow boats.

Here are a few places I would actually recommend: decent reviews, safe areas, good public transport, and no need to sell an organ.

MEININGER Genève Centre Charmilles
Probably the best overall budget option. Modern, very well reviewed, private rooms as well as hostel-style rooms, and easy connections to the centre. Particularly good for friends, couples and small groups.

ibis budget Genève Petit-Lancy
Not glamorous, but clean, reliable and very practical. Private rooms, good reviews and excellent tram/bus connections. Petit-Lancy is residential and calm, and central Geneva is easy to reach.

Geneva by Fassbind
A slightly more comfortable hotel option in the Servette/Charmilles area. Worth checking if you find a good rate.

Geneva Hostel
For those who prefer to spend their money on food, wine and other essentials. Near the lake and quite central, with dormitories but also some private rooms. Simple rather than luxurious, but practical and well located.

Follow the lake: Versoix, Coppet & Nyon

You can also look outside Geneva in the other direction, along the lake towards Versoix, Coppet and Nyon.

All three are on the train line (CEVA) into Geneva, so they can be surprisingly practical. Versoix is the closest and an easy alternative to staying in the city. Coppet is small, quiet and pretty. Nyon is farther away (15 min by train) but is a proper little town in its own right, with the lake, restaurants and considerably more charm than an airport hotel.

The important rule here is simple: stay reasonably close to the railway station. A beautiful bargain halfway up a hill with three buses involved stops being beautiful surprisingly quickly after midnight.

These places are particularly good if you prefer waking up near the lake rather than in central Geneva (obviously there is always Booking.com), and they are worth checking if Geneva prices have entered another dimension.

Escape to France

Geneva is surrounded by France, which occasionally becomes economically useful.

Appart’City Collection Genève Aéroport – Ferney-Voltaire is a good option just across the border: well reviewed, apartment-style rooms and generally cheaper than central Geneva. Ferney is connected to Geneva by bus.

Annemasse can also be considerably cheaper and has the Léman Express train directly into Geneva. If you stay there, however, choose accommodation close to Annemasse station rather than somewhere randomly cheap in the outskirts.

Airbnb

Airbnb (https://fr.airbnb.ch/) can be a very good option, particularly if 3–5 people share an apartment.

In Geneva, I suggest looking in Carouge, Plainpalais, Jonction, Charmilles, Servette, Eaux-Vives, Petit-Lancy or Grand-Lancy. All are well connected; there is really no reason to pay a fortune simply to be beside the lake.

The Airbnb rule: look for Guest Favourite/Superhost, ideally 4.8+, plenty of recent reviews, and a tram/bus/train stop within 5–10 minutes’ walk. Always check the final price after cleaning and service fees: an Airbnb that begins as a bargain can undergo a mysterious Swiss transformation at checkout.

You can also search Ferney-Voltaire or Annemasse in France. In Annemasse, stay near the station/Léman Express; in Ferney, check that you are close to a Geneva bus connection.

One last piece of advice

Book reasonably early. 1–2 May 2027 is a holiday weekend, and Geneva has a remarkable ability to turn an ordinary hotel room into a luxury financial product.

And please don’t worry if your accommodation looks “far” from the centre on the map. Geneva is small. If there is a tram, bus or train nearby, you will be fine, and probably at my party before I am.
